Praying the Psalms

 Praying the Psalms

"What matters is not what we feel like praying about, but what God wants us to ask him for. Not the poverty of our own heart, but the riches of the Word of God must decide how we are to pray."

Dietrich Bonhoeffer from - The Psalms - Prayer Book of the Bible.

Recently the ladies from the growth group that my hubby and I go to had a Jammin’ with the Psalms night.  We made jam together, shared sweet fellowship together, and spent some time reading a few Psalms and then praying through them.

It reminded me of years ago, when I was a fairly new believer and I would meet once a week with a group of ladies at the crack of dawn and we would pick a Psalm, read a few verses and then pray.  We would go around the circle and take turns praising Him -  it was so precious to pray God’s word back to Him.  I had forgotten how much I enjoyed doing that.

I have been reading the Psalms and Proverbs with my younger children this year. (we have not gotten to far yet).  But I want them to become familiar with them. To see the poetry and language in them. To learn that they can go to their Father with anything.

I love how the Psalms are so real…       so vibrant…      so full of emotion…

…so full of life

They remind us…

we can go to our Heavenly Father
with ALL our emotions and feelings and lay them before Him.

We can be so transparent with Him and bear our souls...

He longs for us to come to Him as David did.

For He knows that when we allow ourselves to be that close to Him…

we can’t help but experience His touch…

                                          His presence…

                                                       His transforming power…

The Psalms have been an invaluable resource to prayer in every generation and tradition.
